A British schoolteacher has been arrested in Sudan accused of insulting Islam’s Prophet, after she allowed her pupils to name a teddy bear Muhammad.
Colleagues of Gillian Gibbons, 54, from Liverpool, said she made an „innocent mistake” by letting the six and seven-year-olds choose the name.
Ms Gibbons was arrested after several parents made complaints.
The BBC has learned the charge could lead to six months in jail, 40 lashes or a fine.

The spokesman said the naming of the teddy happened months ago and was chosen by the children because it is a common name in the country.„This happened in September and the parents did not have a problem with it,” he said.

Ms Gibbons, who joined the school in August, asked a seven-year-old girl to bring in her teddy bear and asked the class to pick names for it, he said.„They came up with eight names including Abdullah, Hassan and Muhammad,” Mr Boulos said, adding that she then had the children vote on a name.
Twenty out of the 23 children chose Muhammad as their favourite name.
Mr Boulos said each child was then allowed to take the bear home at weekends and told to write a diary about what they did with it.
He said the children’s entries were collected in a book with a picture of the bear on the cover and a message which read, „My name is Muhammad.”

„Khartoum north prosecution unit has completed its investigation and has charged the Briton Gillian (Gibbons) under Article 125 of the criminal code,” the Sudanese news agency SUNA said, quoting a senior justice ministry official.
The Foreign Office confirmed the charges in the case which is now set to go before the court on Thursday.
Miss Gibbons, who was arrested on Sunday in Khartoum, is expected to appear.
The teacher, from Liverpool, could face 40 lashes, a fine, or six months in jail if convicted.

Şi pentru că all’s well that ends well, radio BBC nu se sfieşte să anunţe că un grup de mici dimensiuni protestează verdictul şi cere o sentinţă mai aspră. Unii erau clar nemulţumiţi şi strigau „moarte celor care insultă Profetul”, însă pe ansamblu demonstranţii erau cît se poate de agreabili. Adică good-natured. I mean, people were smiling as they chanted. Am menţionat că era oricum un grup nu prea mare?

3 decembrie 2007Sudanul este condus de un regim openly islamist si are la activ multe infaptuiri … epocale. Cel mai bun exemplu este ca a omorat intre 200000 si 300000 de musulmani nearabi din Darfur. Se pare ca povestea in care au implicat-o pe Ms. Gibbons priveste dorinta guvernului sudanez de a domoli fervoarea britanica in condamnarea genocidului infaptuit de militiile Janjaweed.
Este foarte greu sa iti castigi painea onest intr-o tara islamica in cazul in care nu esti musulman. Nu este vorba doar de Sudan, hai sa ne amintim de infirmierele bulgare din Libia, de necazurile pe care le au muncitorii straini din Nigeria, din Arabia Saudita etc.
Ursuletul de plus nu putea sa fie o amenintare pentru guvernul de la Khartoum, iar faptul ca avea numele de Muhammad nu il transforma in blasfemie. Sunt chiar destui crestini – arabi – care poarta acest nume. A fost numai un pretext, la fel ca si caricaturile daneze pentru a se crea un val de protest islamic.

3 decembrie 2007Francesco, tot ce spui tu e zero pentru feministele de carton de la „The View”. The View este o emisiune produsă de postul american ABC. Una din gazde e Whoopi Goldberg. Show-ul se vrea o emisiune de current affairs dintr-o perspectivă feminină. Recent, cucoanele au pălăvrăgit despre incidentul din Sudan şi au decis că învăţătoarea e de vină pentru că nu şi-a dat silinţa să înveţe din timp care sînt sensibilităţile sudaneze. În final, Whoopi Goldberg nu scapă ocazia să lamenteze ignoranţa americanilor.

Ca femeie, madam Goldberg nu dă doi bani pe suferinţa altei femei, iar ca negresă, nu suflă o vorbă despre practica sclaviei în Sudan. În ziua de azi, nu cu secole în urmă. Ah, dar cînd e practicată de musulmani, sclavia devine brusc un obicei local cool, o expresie socială aparte a unei culturi exotice.
