George Weigel este unul dintre cei mai cunoscuți gânditori politici conservatori, un excepţional filosof al religiei şi biograful oficial al lui Ioan Paul al II-lea (carte apărută în traducerea românească a lui Radu Vasile la editura Galaxia Gutenberg). Este şi autorul unei lucrari clasice, intitulată ”The Final Revolution”, despre rolul religiei în distrugerea comunismului. Cu alte cuvinte, George Weigel este unul din cei mai importanţi gânditori catolici contemporani.
Acest eseu face parte din seria “The Catholic Difference” şi a fost publicat pe 23 ianuarie 2009, după ce George W. Bush şi-a încheiat al doilea mandat. Totodată, George Weigel scrie şi pentru National Review, publicaţie întemeiată de William F Buckley Jr.

Paddy, ticălosul satului, a murit. Întreaga populaţie a satului, unde pe parcursul vieții sale Paddy s-a străduit să-i facă cei din jur să se simtă mizerabil, s-a adunat la slujba funerară – unii, fără îndoială, pentru a se convinge că Paddy a dispărut cu adevărat. Ştiind sentimentele congregației, pastorul bătrân și înțelept s-a adresat astfel comunității sale, înainte de ultimul ritual funerar. “Acum, dragi fraţi şi surori, înainte să îl întoarcem pe fratele nostru în ţărînă, ar fi un act de caritate dacă cineva dintre voi ar face un pas în față şi ar spune un cuvânt bun despre cel pe care îl ingropăm azi.” Nimeni nu s-a mișcat. “Haideţi, fraţi şi surori”, a îndemnat pastorul, “sigur există cineva care poate spune ceva de bine despre acest om.” Liniște desăvârșită. “Dragii mei, într-un minut îi voi spune ajutorului meu să închida ușile și nimeni nu va părăsi această biserică până când nu va păși cineva, în faţa tuturor, să spună ceva de bine despre fratele care ne părăsește azi.” În cele din urmă, un sătean bătrân s-a ridicat în picioare, s-a strecurat de o parte a sicriului şi, cu spatele la pastor, a spus cu voce clară: “Cred că fratele său a fost chiar mai rău.”
Părăsind serviciul public, George W. Bush poate fi iertat daca s-ar simţi ca Paddy, în cazul în care ar fi un om vulnerabil la autocompătimire. Din fericire nu este. Și refuz categoric să îl laud pe președintele Bush, la finalul a două mandate prezidențiale, în spiritul unei remarci de genul “Hm, James J. Buchanan și Herbert Hoover au fost și mai slabi.” Poate vă întrebaţi, de ce? Datorită multor lucruri care ar trebui să conteze pentru catolici.
Trebuie să îl laud pentru sprijinul constant domestic și internaţional oferit mișcării pro-viață. Datorită președintelui Bush avem incă doi judecători numiți la Curtea Supremă care ştiu ce greşeală constituţională teribilă a fost cazul Roe vs. Wade. Tot datorită lui avem zeci de alţi judecatori cu convingeri similare la nivel federal şi în curțile de recurs. Datorită președintelui Bush, guvernul american a demarcat o limită morală importantă în domeniul cercetării celulelor stem, în acelaşi timp accelerând cercetarea bioetică, ce a produs rezultate reale în domeniu.
Pe plan internațional, administrația Bush s-a opus ferm tentaţiei oarbe de a folosi legea internațională în scopul declarării avortului ca un drept international şi o componentă indispensabilă a emancipării femeii; aşa cum mi-a mărturisit un oficial marcant al Vaticanului, în urmă cu un an: “Știm că nici o altă administrație americană nu va sprijini cauza noastră așa cum a făcut-o administraţia Bush.”
Trebuie să îl laud pe președinte pentru efortul de a eradica SIDA şi malaria din Africa si de a alina suferința celor atinşi de aceste boli teribile. George W. Bush este ridiculizat în anumite părți ale SUA; tot el este venerat de cei ale căror vieţi au fost salvate sau îmbunătăţite de politicile sale.
Trebuie să îi mulţumesc președintelui pentru primirea caldă pe care a oferit-o Papei Benedict al XVI-lea la Casa Alba, pe 15 aprilie 2008 — o primire care ar trebui să contrazică definitiv noţiunea că ar fi ceva incompatibil între o credință catolică robustă și recunoştinţa matură pentru miracolul politic al democrației americane.
Trebuie să îi mulţumesc președintelui Bush pentru decenţa sa personală, manifestată în atenţia (nepopularizată) faţă de de cei răniţi şi familiile celor căzuţi; în refuzul său de a deveni un om amar în fața calomniilor insuportabile; şi în calmul manifestat în mijlocul unui şir de năpaste pe care mulţi dintre noi nu şi le pot imagina. Îi mulţumesc pentru afirmarea fermă a credinței sale creştine şi pentru recunoaşterea importanței pe care rugăciunea o are in viaţa sa zilnică. Și îi mulţumesc pentru că nu s-a sinchisit de batjocura pe care şi-a atras-o printr-o astfel de mărturisire publică, din partea mass mediei secularizate, a culturii americane înalte, a unor cretini precum Michael Moore și din partea snobilor euro-seculari care au surâs dispreţuitor la cowboyul evanghelic din Casa Alba în timp ce continentul lor murea de plictiseală spirituală.

Interest rates were over fifteen percent, depriving millions of American families of a chance to buy a home. In countless communities, the unemployment rate, like inflation and interest rates, was in double digits. Militarily, our nation was seriously in danger of falling behind the Soviet Union at a time a former naval officer was holding the watch as Commander in Chief. The Soviets were modernizing their fleet, ground, and air forces on a massive scale. Yet on any given day, I was told as many as half the ships in our navy couldn’t leave port because of a lack of spare parts or crew. Half our military aircraft couldn’t fly for lack of spare parts; the overwhelming majority of our military enlisted personnel were high school dropouts.
Abroad, the Soviet Union was engaged in a brutal war in Afghanistan and Communism was extending its tentacles deep into Central America and Africa. In Iran, more than fifty Americans had been held captive for almost a year under the regime of a vicious religious despot who had risen to power while a loyal ally of the United States had been forced from power and our country had done nothing to help him. I made a decision not to criticize President Carter regarding Iran, I knew anything I might say could interfere with efforts to free the hostages. Being governor had taught me that sometimes there are things going on that only the top person in the government knows about, and I thought it was best for me to keep quiet. But I wasn’t happy with the events in Iran. Our government’s decision to stand piously by while the Shah was forced from office led to the establishment of a despotic regime in Teheran that was far more evil and far more tyrannical than the one it replaced. And, as I was to learn through personal experience, it left a legacy of problems that would haunt our country for years to come.

Mondale tried to make it sound as if he had undergone a metamorphosis. A few days ago, the New York Times was trumpeting President Obama’s “gains” at the UN concerning Iran’s nuclear program.
With a beaming Mr. Obama standing next to him, Mr. Medvedev signaled for the first time that Russia would be amenable to longstanding American requests to toughen sanctions against Iran significantly if, as expected, nuclear talks scheduled for next month failed to make progress.
Well. That was then, this is now:
China will not support increased sanctions on Iran as a way to curb its nuclear program, a government spokeswoman said Thursday. Although China has generally opposed the use of sanctions, the announcement is sure to complicate President Obama ’s efforts to impose tougher penalties on Iran, should international talks over Tehran’s nuclear ambitions, scheduled for Oct. 1, fail to make headway.
Even if China had supported sanctions – and Obama may yet find concessions to bring them on board – there’s no particular reason to think Russia would abide by them.

Obama EPA releases Bush-era global warming finding
The e-mail and the 28-page document attached to it, released Tuesday by the Environmental Protection Agency, show that back in December of 2007 the agency concluded that six gases linked to global warming pose dangers to public welfare, and wanted to take steps to regulate their release from automobiles and the burning of gasoline.
The document specifically cites global warming’s effects on air quality, agriculture, forestry, water resources and coastal areas as endangering public welfare.
